DanieBlog - Time ago, I used to be a Microsoft Windows user, I’ve been using it for a period of 7-8 years. Around 2013, I decided to switch to using Linux completely, not using Windows. This is my share of why I chose Linux rather than Windows for the future.

Getting started with Linux

I approached the computer quite late, there are many reasons for that. I started using computers around 2006, compared to today’s children, I know the computer quite late.

Of course, like every other kid in my country, I was taught to use Microsoft Windows operating system first, get familiar with the keyboard, learn how to program Pascal.

At the beginning of 2011, I started to join a research team at the university. My first project was about the HoneyNet system – intrusion detection and collection system.

This is where I began to learn about the open source world, the Linux world. I started learning a lot about Linux. I learned what Linux is, I learned how to install a Linux server (I mainly work on Ubuntu server at the moment).

Having said that everything started to be difficult, the documents I could find were written in English (in my country, English at the time was quite limited).

Decision to abandon Windows

This is nothing to be proud of, I must say that nothing is proud of. In my country, cracking software, using pirated software is quite common. At present, the situation is better when users also start to buy software copyright to use.

During the time I used Windows, I was no exception. I use the tools to crack the OS, cracking the applications installed on my computer. And i did not take this as a reason, but my whole family’s income was only around 80-90$ a month. I can not afford to buy any software at the time.

In one re-installation of the operating system for my computer, I found the machine running quite slowly when updating the operating system. And I do not every time i go to install OS, have to go find crack tools, it’s pretty tired. And that day I installed Linux and used it.

What are the benefits of Linux?

I’ve used quite a few Linux operating systems for my desktop. I recommend you start with the Linux Mint, which is the operating system I’m using until now. It’s really good and stable.

I will highlight some of the benefits that Linux brings to you:

  • First, it’s completely free including operating system and applications. For countries where income is only around 200$ a month, saving a lot of money on copyright is a good thing.
  • Automatically detect hardware. That’s what I always liked about Linux. I will not have to look for the driver for each hardware as when installing Windows. However, with some older computers, It will also have problems identifying.
  • Allows users to edit, manipulate more with their computer.
  • There is an application store, just a few clicks or a few simple commands, you can install the desired application. You do not need to look for sources and download to install as on Windows.
  • As someone who is working with Linux, I realize that it allows the user to understand more about computers. Users who want to do something need to know what they are doing, whether it is harmful to the system. Unlike Windows, where convenience is required, users do not need to understand too much.
  • It’s also important that you see large systems nowadays using Linux extensively. I believe that future trend is open source, open source operating system.

Conclusion

With all the above, I use Linux at all times. However, for beginners, switching from Windows will be a bit difficult in the beginning. After about 2-3 weeks you can use it.
